Colorado River Rafting in Westwater Canyon (1 to 3 days)

Our best short trip: explosive whitewater rafting and great geology!

Westwater Canyon Colorado River Rafting Trip (Westwater Canyon)
Nestled deep in the red sandstone cliffs between Grand Junction, CO and Moab, UT lies Westwater Canyon on the Colorado River (see map). This hidden stretch of the Colorado River is a perfect blend of rollicking whitewater and scenic canyon beauty, together with excellent swimming opportunities, inflatable kayaks, and laughter-filled rapids.

Notable features:

  • Paddleboats may be used in low water levels.
  • Billion-year-old black schist rock is exposed here and in the Grand Canyon.
  • Side stops to historic miner's cabin & Outlaw Cave.

Location:
Moab, Utah, on the Colorado River

Minimum age:
10 years (up to 14 years depending on water levels)

1-Day Westwater Canyon/Colorado River

Our one day trip covers seventeen miles of some of the greatest scenery in the area with 12 of the best Class III and IV rapids offered on a one day trip. In the heart of Westwater Canyon we encounter rapids with exotic names like Funnel Falls, Sock-It-To-Me, Last Chance, Skull Rapid and the Room-of-Doom. With this trip you get the most whitewater with the least amount of time spent.

Westwater Canyon On the early trips when the water is higher we use row rafts were the boatman rows the raft through the canyon with the option of paddle rafts when the water comes down a bit. Paddle rafts provide more active participation and are available on most trips. Availability of paddle rafts is dependent on the water level and the interest of the group. Call for more information.

On the second day we float and run the rapids of this incredibly scenic section of the Colorado River with the option of running the rapids in a two-man Inflatable Kayak.

3-Day Westwater Canyon/Colorado River (3 days/2 nights)

What to Expect:
On the first day we experience a calm morning of floating and visits to historic sites isolated from modern civilization. After lunch the water current becomes notably swifter as it is forced into the narrow Black Granite Walls towering 1600 feet over head. Here in the heart of Westwater Canyon we encounter rapids with exotic names like Funnel Falls, Sock-It-To-Me, Last Chance, Skull Rapid and the Room-of-Doom.

Westwater Canyon As the trip continues on day two, spectacular views open up as the narrow canyons give way to unusual rock formations that are reminiscent of the famous Monument Valley area. Here you will have the option of paddling your own inflatable kayak through the Fisher Towers section of the Colorado River. Camp features one the most incredible views on the Colorado River with an evening sky that is second to none.

Day three is spent winding along the edge of Arches National Park where you're surrounded by spectacular red canyon walls, mesas and towers. This is "Old West" canyon country where classic movies such as "Wagonmaster"and John Wayne's "Rio Grande" and "Commancheros " were filmed. After navigating several fun splashy rapids and enjoying lunch along the river, we'll exit a few miles up stream from town, where transportation will return us to Moab.

Trip cost:
Adults: $480
Youth (10-17) or group of 8 or more: $390
(Price includes camping equipment)
